Lord (John) Browne is managing director at Riverstone, the private equity firm, and was group chief executive of BP between 1995 and 2007. His awards include the inaugural Channing Corporate Citizenship Award from British American Business Inc., the Dwight D Eisenhower Leadership Award from the Business Council for International Understanding, the Henry Shaw Medal of the Missouri Botanical Gardens, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers Public Service Award.

During his time at BP, he was voted ‘Most Admired CEO’ by Management Today (1999-2002) and was credited with leading the industry on approaches to climate change, transparency and other issues. Among his current positions, Lord Browne is President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Trustee of the Tate Gallery and  Chairman of the Cambridge Judge Business School.  He has served on the boards of SmithKline Beecham, DaimlerChrysler, Goldman Sachs and Intel.

Lord Browne holds a first class degree in physics from Cambridge and an MS in Business from Stanford. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates by over 15 universities worldwide.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society. He was knighted in 1998 and made a life peer in 2001.

 

 

   

Bill Emmott is a globally-respected commentator and consultant on international affairs and from 1993 until 2006 was editor of The Economist, the world’s leading weekly on current affairs. The circulation of The Economist more than doubled to almost 1.1m worldwide during this time.

Bill Emmott held several posts at The Economist prior to becoming editor, including finance and economics editor and business affairs editor. More recently, his numerous books include ‘Rivals: how the power struggle between China, India and Japan will shape our next decade’ - described by the Financial Times as "remarkable for the clarity of its economic and historical analysis".

Among his current positions, Bill Emmott is a member of the executive committee of the Trilateral Commission, a member of the Swiss Re Chairman's Advisory Panel, a member of the President's Council of the University of Tokyo, and co-chairman of the Canada-Europe Roundtable for Business. He has honorary degrees from Warwick and City universities in Britain and Northwestern University in America, and is an honorary fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford. Bill Emmott originally studied philosophy, politics and economics at Oxford.

 

 

   

Paul Collier is professor of economics and director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies at Oxford University. He is one of the world's leading experts on African and resource-rich economies, with extensive research on topics such as the causes and consequences of civil war, the effects of aid, and the problems of democracy in low-income societies. Professor Collier was formerly Director of the Development Research Group at the World Bank (1998-2003).

Recent books include ' The Plundered Planet: How to Reconcile Prosperity With Nature' (2010), 'Wars, Guns and Votes: Democracy in Dangerous Places' (2009), and 'The Bottom Billion’ (2007), which won the prestigious Lionel Gelber Prize and also the Arthur Ross Book Award from the Council on Foreign Relations (described as "the most significant award for a book on international affairs").

In addition to his academic work, Professor Collier has had significant influence on policy issues as an advisor to governments, international organisations, and also corporations. In recent years, for example, he has been a senior advisor to Tony Blair’s Commission on Africa, addressed the UN General Assembly, and given a seminar at 10 Downing St. He is also Professor Associate of CERDI, Université d'Auvergne.
